Community of Practice #2:
“Health Disparities and CLAS for State-level Policymakers and Advocates”
This Community of Practice will focus on policies program models, funding, and advocacy issues related to reducing health disparities and improving the quality of culturally and linguistically appropriate health services (CLAS) at the state level. Discussion topics may include policy and financing initiatives to address health disparities among minority and immigrant populations, language access to health care, cultural competence training, Health People 2010 goals, reaching culturally diverse populations in emergency preparedness efforts, immigrant access to health services, etc. Participants will play a key role in developing the discussion agenda over the course of the project.
This Community of Practice will be of interest to policymakers, change agents, and those interested in influencing policy at a variety of levels: state agency and program managers responsible for minority health issues; legislative staff with responsibility for or an interest in minority or immigrant health; policy advocates who work with state agencies or legislative bodies; non-profits and community based organizations that influence change in their states. We hope to build a geographically diverse group composed of individuals at all levels of the policy process – novice through expert.
This Community of Practice started in September 2009 with 12 participants from around the country, and will meet for 10 months. The group will produce a public resource of information collected and discussed during meetings -- we will post a link here when the resource is available.
