Preconference Workshop A-9
The Minnesota Interpreting Stakeholders Group, an UMTIA committee, will present a 3 hour training module in the morning from 9 a.m to 12 pm that it has been piloting for patient care-givers on the NCIHC code of ethics for medical interpreters, the role of the interpreter, and how to work effectively with interpreters. Participants will engage in role plays, demonstrations, and discussions with the trainers.
Preconference Workshop B-9
The NCIHC is a multidisciplinary organization based in the United States whose mission is to promote culturally competent professional health care interpreting as a means to support equal access to health care for individuals with limited English proficiency. In response to discussions from our membership, the NCIHC will lead a forum for discussion from 1:30 pm-4:30 pm on pros and cons of different modes of interpreting, with a focus on the patient perspective. This topic has recently generated significant interest on the NCIHC listserv, and this forum will be an opportunity to hash out all the details involved in face-to-face interpreting, telephonic interpreting, and remote simultaneous interpreting, as well as patient and interpreter experiences with each. Information and opinions resulting from the forum will form the basis of a future NCIHC "white paper" on the topic.
